Matt and Matt were absolutely fantastic. They delivered terrific service. I had issues with the roof top AC system in a condo that required service within a very tight timeline. I have worked with many trades people and contractors over the years. They displayed a high regard for safety with working in the unit and on the 5 story roof top. Their knowledge led to the quick and efficient troubleshooting of the issues with resolution. The staff had superb communication using the latest technology in messaging and service location of technician with an uber like app sent through text. I would highly recommend this team. Thanks

I used Lakeshore to disconnect (and eventually reconnect) my AC because I was having some concrete work done on my patio. I needed a company quickly (less than a week notice), and the team at Lakeshore said they would make it happen. And they did. The price was very fair. The communication from Garrison was great to schedule both services. Matt, the technician, was kind, informative, and on time. Matt worked a late evening (in the dark) to ensure my unit was removed in time, and on a Saturday to make sure it was reinstalled prior to a heat wave. I was a new customer but I felt like I was treated like a family friend. I will definitely be using them in the future for my HVAC needs.

How Do You Know If Your Furnace Needs To Be Repaired?

Whether you have a gas or electric furnace in your home, there are several warning signs that can indicate it’s time for a repair:

Unusual Noises: If you hear banging, rattling, or screeching sounds coming from your furnace, this could signal issues with the motor, blower, or other internal components. Gas furnaces may make loud booming noises, indicating a delayed ignition or burner problem.

Inconsistent Heating: If certain rooms in your home are too cold or too warm, or if the furnace struggles to maintain the desired temperature, it may be a sign of an issue with your furnace’s heating elements, blower, or ductwork.

Frequent Cycling: If your furnace is turning on and off more frequently than normal, this could be a sign of a malfunctioning thermostat, clogged filters, or overheating. For gas furnaces, frequent cycling may also indicate a problem with the pilot light or ignition system.

Increased Energy Bills: A sudden spike in your utility bills could indicate that your furnace is working harder than it should due to issues like dirty filters, worn-out parts, or inefficient operation. This applies to both gas and electric furnaces.

Pilot Light or Ignition Issues: For gas furnaces, if the pilot light won’t stay lit or you notice it has turned yellow instead of blue, it could be a sign of a serious problem like a gas leak or carbon monoxide buildup. Electric furnaces may show similar issues with electrical ignition failure.

Blowing Cold Air: If your furnace is blowing cold or lukewarm air, this could indicate a problem with the heating elements in an electric furnace or an issue with the gas burner in a gas furnace.

Constant Repairs: If your furnace requires frequent repairs or is over 15 years old, it might be more cost-effective to consider a replacement. Older furnaces, especially gas ones, tend to lose efficiency over time and may become prone to breakdowns.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to address them early. Ignoring furnace problems can lead to more serious and costly repairs down the road or even pose safety risks.

What Should You Do Before Calling Us To Repair Your Furnace?

Before reaching out for professional furnace repair, there are a few simple troubleshooting steps and maintenance checks you can try that may resolve the issue:

  1. Check the Thermostat: Ensure that your thermostat is set to “heat” and the temperature is set above the current room temperature. For digital thermostats, check the batteries and replace them if necessary. A simple adjustment can sometimes solve the problem without needing a repair.
  2. Inspect the Air Filters: A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow, causing your furnace to overheat and shut down. Replace or clean the filter if it hasn’t been changed recently. For best performance, filters should be replaced every 1-3 months, especially during heavy use.
  3. Reset the Furnace: Many furnaces, especially newer models, have a reset button. If your furnace shuts down or isn’t working, try pressing the reset button to see if that resolves the issue. However, if the furnace keeps shutting off after resetting, it’s time to call a professional.
  4. Check the Circuit Breaker: Verify that the circuit breaker connected to your furnace hasn't tripped. If it has, reset it and see if your furnace powers back on. If the breaker trips repeatedly, there may be an underlying electrical issue that needs professional attention.
  5. Inspect the Pilot Light (for Gas Furnaces): If you have a gas furnace, check the pilot light to ensure it’s lit and burning a steady blue flame. If the pilot light is out or if it’s burning yellow or orange, there could be a problem with your furnace’s fuel supply or burner, which requires professional attention.
  6. Ensure Vents and Registers Are Open: Check to make sure that all your air vents and registers are fully open and not blocked by furniture or other obstructions. Blocked vents can cause your furnace to overheat or work inefficiently.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue or you’re still experiencing problems, don’t hesitate to call us. Our experienced technicians are ready to provide professional furnace repair and get your system running efficiently again.

What Are The Most Common Furnace Problems We Repair?

At Lakeshore Heating & Cooling, we’ve encountered and repaired a wide range of furnace issues. Some of the most common problems we address include:

  1. Faulty Thermostats: Thermostat malfunctions can cause your furnace to cycle on and off frequently or prevent it from turning on altogether. Whether it’s a simple calibration issue or a complete replacement, we can fix the problem to restore proper temperature control.
  2. Dirty or Clogged Air Filters: One of the most frequent causes of furnace issues is a clogged filter. A dirty filter can restrict airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut down, or reduce efficiency. Regular filter changes are an important task to keep your furnace running smoothly.
  3. Ignition or Pilot Light Problems: For gas furnaces, problems with the ignition system or pilot light can prevent the furnace from heating. This could be due to a faulty thermocoupler, dirty burners, or a gas supply issue. We diagnose and repair these components to get your furnace running again.
  4. Blower Motor Issues: The blower motor is responsible for distributing heated air throughout your home. If it fails, you may notice weak airflow or no air coming through your vents at all. We can repair or replace the blower motor to ensure efficient airflow.
  5. Frequent Cycling: If your furnace is frequently turning on and off, it could be due to a clogged filter, thermostat issues, or a malfunctioning limit switch. This short cycling wastes energy and reduces your furnace’s lifespan, and we can identify and resolve the root cause.
  6. Strange Noises: Banging, rattling, or squealing sounds coming from your furnace often indicate mechanical issues such as loose components, worn-out belts, or motor problems. These sounds should not be ignored, as they could signal larger issues.
  7. Lack of Heat: If your furnace is running but not producing heat, it could be due to issues with the heating elements, burner, or even the thermostat. We can troubleshoot and fix whatever is preventing your system from heating properly.
  8. Carbon Monoxide Leaks (for Gas Furnaces): A cracked heat exchanger can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide leaks. If you notice signs of a leak, such as a yellow flame on your gas furnace or carbon monoxide detector alerts, call us immediately for emergency repairs.

These are just a few of the most common furnace problems we repair. No matter the issue, our experienced technicians are equipped to handle it efficiently and restore comfort to your home.

If you'd like to schedule an estimate for your furnace repair please give us a call (440) 944-0072 or fill out our online estimate request form and we'll get right back to you.

Should You Replace Or Repair Your Furnace If It's Failing?

Deciding whether to repair or replace your furnace can be challenging, but there are a few key factors to consider. If your furnace is more than 10-15 years old, has required frequent repairs recently, or if the cost of a major repair is approaching half the price of a new system, replacement may be a more cost-effective option in the long run. An aging furnace not only loses efficiency over time but can also drive up energy bills as it struggles to maintain consistent heat.

For homeowners looking to increase energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint, replacing a furnace with a heat pump can be a smart choice. Heat pumps are highly efficient, using electricity to transfer heat instead of generating it, making them an excellent option for homes in Ohio where temperatures fluctuate throughout the year. They provide both heating and cooling, making them a versatile, all-in-one solution for your home’s comfort.

What Is Needed to Convert from a Furnace to a Heat Pump?

Converting from a furnace to a heat pump involves a few key steps:

  1. Electrical Upgrades: Heat pumps typically require higher electrical capacity than standard gas furnaces, so an upgrade to your home’s electrical panel may be needed.
  2. Ductwork Evaluation: If your home has existing ductwork, we’ll assess it to ensure it's compatible with a heat pump system. In some cases, modifications may be required to improve efficiency and airflow.
  3. Outdoor Unit Installation: Heat pumps include an outdoor unit that must be installed in a suitable location with enough space and clearance.
  4. System Sizing and Selection: It’s crucial to select the right size and model of heat pump to match your home’s heating and cooling needs. Our technicians will evaluate your home’s size, insulation, and climate requirements to recommend the best system.

If your furnace is nearing the end of its lifespan, a heat pump could be a long-term, energy-efficient alternative that not only reduces heating costs but also provides cooling during the summer months. Our team can help you decide if converting to a heat pump is the right choice for your home.

Do You Have Questions About Furnace Repair?

For gas furnaces, common issues include problems with the ignition or pilot light, cracked heat exchangers, and malfunctioning thermostats. In electric furnaces, common problems involve heating element failures, blown fuses, or electrical connection issues. In both types, dirty filters, worn-out blower motors, and airflow blockages are frequent problems that can lead to inefficient heating.

Signs your furnace needs repair include strange noises (banging, rattling, or screeching), inconsistent temperatures in your home, the furnace constantly turning on and off (short cycling), or a sudden increase in energy bills. For gas furnaces, if your pilot light is yellow instead of blue, or you notice carbon monoxide alerts, you should call for immediate repairs.

If your gas furnace is blowing cold air, it may be due to a pilot light issue, thermostat malfunction, or clogged air filters restricting airflow. Another common issue is a faulty blower motor that isn’t circulating heated air properly. We recommend checking the thermostat and filters before calling for repair.

An electric furnace may fail to produce heat due to burnt-out heating elements, blown fuses, or tripped breakers. If the system is receiving power but still isn’t working, it could be an issue with the blower motor or a wiring problem that requires professional attention.

In Ohio, where furnaces are used heavily during the winter months, the average lifespan of a gas furnace is about 15-20 years, while electric furnaces can last slightly longer, typically 20-25 years. Regular maintenance can help extend the life of your furnace, but if it’s reaching the end of its lifespan and frequently breaking down, it may be more cost-effective to replace it.

Furnace repair costs can vary depending on the problem. Minor issues, like thermostat adjustments or filter replacements, are relatively inexpensive. More serious repairs, such as blower motor replacements or heat exchanger repairs, can cost more. In Ohio, average furnace repair costs typically range from $150 to $500, but we'll provide a transparent estimate before starting any work.

Yes, there are a few things you can check before calling for professional help:

  • Ensure the thermostat is set to “heat” and the temperature is correct.
  • Check the air filters and replace them if they’re dirty or clogged.
  • Inspect the circuit breaker to make sure it hasn’t tripped.
  • For gas furnaces, verify that the pilot light is lit and burning blue.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, it’s time to call us for professional diagnostics and repair.

If your furnace fails during winter, it’s important to act quickly. First, try the simple troubleshooting steps listed above. If the issue persists, call us immediately for emergency furnace repair. We understand how critical a working furnace is during Ohio's cold winters and offer prompt, reliable service to restore your heat as quickly as possible.

Yes, we can repair all makes and models of furnaces, including popular brands like Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Goodman, American Standard, Rheem, Bryant, York, Amana, and Ruud. Our technicians are experienced with both gas and electric furnaces, ensuring we can diagnose and fix any problem.

I tried my hand at HVAC and replaced the blower motor. I was still hearing the same noise as I was before fixing it so I assumed I messed it up and called a technician. I stressed to them that I am hosting Easter and need this problem fixed today. All the techs were busy so the owner of the company came out. He fixed the problem, checked the a/c and answered all my questions. He even gave me a discount on the inspection fee due to nothing being wrong. Very pleased with him and his company. I will be a customer for life.
